A Brief History of Coquitlam
The Anglicized name, Coquitlam from Kwikwetlem, is derived from a Coast Salish term meaning “red fish up the river.” The state-of-the-art Fraser Mill, built on the north bank of the Fraser River in Coquitlam in 1889, launched the development of the community into a new era as an industrial centre in the Vancouver metropolitan area.
Today, Coquitlam is more residential than industrial, especially since the closing of Fraser Mills in 2001. Designated as a Cultural Capital of Canada in 2009, Coquitlam is home to the Molson Canadian Theatre and the Evergreen Cultural Centre as well as numerous yearly festivals, like Festival du Bois (first full weekend in March), the Water’s Edge Festival (third full weekend in March), Como Lake Fishing Derby (last Sunday in May), BC Highland Games (last Saturday in June), a Canada Day Celebration at Town Centre Park (July 1), and the Blue Mountain Music Festival (mid-July).
