COMMON PROBLEMS

Three Common Problems that Require Hearing Aid Repair

The hearing aids that have come into our shop for repair typically have any one, two or all three of the following common problems:

Wax Buildup

Wax Buildup, which gets inside the casing and causes delicate electronic components to malfunction.

Excessive Moisture

Excessive Moisture, which causes shorts, interruption of the electrical currents or produces corrosion inside the casing or battery compartment.

Broken Components

Broken Components and Loose Wires, which occur from daily wear, dropping and/or stepping on them as well as faulty components.

Quick Tip

Daily cleaning, removing your hearing aids to shower or swim, changing wax filters according to manufacturer instructions, and performing frequent inspections to identify problems before they get worse can all prevent or lower your repair bill. Scheduled maintenance also helps extend the service life of your device and improve its performance.

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions About Hearing Aid Repair

You shouldn’t, but we can. Just keep them clean and dry, and let us worry about troubleshooting, maintenance and repairs. Tape, glue and other home repairs might work in a pinch, but your hearing device is a finely tuned instrument that needs expert TLC for optimal performance.

We handle most repairs in-house, but if we have to send them to the manufacturer for repair or replacement of critical components, we use express shipping to ensure that they get back to you as soon as possible.

Our mobile hearing aid specialists will fix your hearing aids while you wait whenever possible, but if we send them to the manufacturer or it’s going to take a few days to get them back to you, we’ve got you covered with a loanable pair of hearing aids that will be similar.

The cost of repairs depends on whether or not your hearing aids are under warranty and the type of damage. Units under two years of age are usually covered by your warranty, but older units may not be covered unless you purchased a warranty extension.

Repairs for hearing aids that are out of warranty can run $400 or more for a broken microphone, a short or water damage, while more serious issues such as cracked casings may cost more or may not be repairable.

Depending on whether your broken hearing aid is still under warranty, the type or severity of damage and the age of your unit, replacement may be the better option. Replace rather than repair if:

  • Your device is more than five years old (to take advantage of new technology).
  • Your device has spent a lot of time in our repair shop.
  • Your device is cracked and/or are custom-molded, so repairs may not be possible.
  • Your prescription has changed, or you may want to take advantage of new technology that wasn’t available when you purchased your device.
